12 Hours of Disco. Help.
If you read my previous blog (which has zero views), I had to DJ at a new disco club in Columbus, Ohio. My original set time was from 9pm to 1 in the morning. They didn't have anyone to fill the brunch spot so they asked if I could come in early. I said that I would come in early and do both spots if needed.
I was very nervous the night before. I didn't get much sleep because of how anxious I was. I woke up and drove to the club. I got there early and they told me that it has been slow. They told me that I could start playing at 2 if I wanted to save some music. The owners of the club didn't think that they were going to stay open until around midnight. I started playing at 2:30. For the next 4 hours I played music at a low volume for all the brunch eaters. No one was really dancing because they were all sitting and not consuming copious amounts of alcohol. This was my view for around 6 hours. Most of the people were eating downstairs.
I played alone from 2:30 to 9:30, where my friend joined me. Right around this time is where a bunch of people started to show up. We cranked up the master volume knob, I put my ear plugs in, and we let it rip. My mom wanted a picture of me, so I asked my friend to take a first day of school picture.
For the next four hours, we played a bunch of disco songs and remixes. The crowd was larger than expected and really loving the music. Keep in mind this was a Sunday, so we were not expecting this many people at all.
As we reached closed to 2AM, which is typically when clubs have already emptied out, it was evident that the people were not leaving. I was expecting the club owner to tell us to start winding it down so people would leave. He told us the opposite. He said pick it up and said "play something wild." We started to play harder mashups that people could sing along to. 2:30 in the morning is when I played the last song. We played Margaritaville to honor the late Jimmy Buffett.
I played disco for exactly 12 hours. I stood on my feet for 12 hours. I was sober for 11 of those hours. It was not a pleasant experience, but it was fun towards the end. I am back this Friday and Saturday if anyone wants to groove.
Cole, this sounds like it was a very cool experience. It seems like the people there enjoyed your performance! It also sounds like the late night was worth it. I hope your gig continues to be successful!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds and looks like so much fun. I'm not much of a club goer but this may have convinced me to stop by someday. Keep on jamming!
